
Cup awarded to Bangor City Football Club for taking part in the Anglo Italian League in 1978. Bobby Charlton the Manchester United and England superstar, then a director of Bangor City Football Club, famously played for Bangor during this tournament.
Bangor City Football Club was founded in 1876 and is one of the oldest clubs in Wales. They were founder members of several leagues including the North Wales Coast League, the Welsh National League, the Welsh National League (North), the Northern Premier League, the Alliance Premier League and the League of Wales, as well as playing in the inaugural Welsh Cup. The team has won the Welsh Cup eight times and the Welsh Premier League three, as well as taking part in European competitions. They also played in the lower leagues of the English pyramid and FA club. They played at Wembley in the final of the FA trophy in 1984, the first Welsh club to play at Wembley since Cardiff in 1927.
The club’s home colours have traditionally been royal blue shirts, shorts and socks, although it has varied over the years. Notable former players include Bobby Charlton and Neville Southall.
The Club was suspended from any football activty in 2021 due to financial difficulties. In 2019 Bangor City Football Club Supporters’ Association formed a new football club, Bangor 1876 to continue competitive football within Bangor. At the end of 2024 the Supporters Association voted to change the name of the club to Bangor City 1876.
