George Henry Sharpe. c. 1879

(oil painting)

A portrait of George Henry Sharpe (1863 – 1879) who worked as a young man at Yr Eifl quarry in Trefor in the 1870s. Tragically he was involved in an accident at the quarry and died from his injuries at the age of 17. This was donated to Storiel by a descendant of George. The Sharpe family moved from Mount Sorrel, Leicestershire to work in Yr Eifl granite quarry, Trefor in the late 1860s and remained in the area. The artist is unknown, but may have been painted by an artisan painter.
