- Description: Born in Rock Ferry, Cheshire in 1848, Hayes was a painter, novelist, playwright, composer and economist. He trained as an architect before studying painting at the Liverpool School of Art under Henry Dawson. A founder member of the Liverpool Water Colour Society, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and was an Associate of the Royal Cambrian Society.
In 1875 Hayes visited Wales and for the next 30 years he spent a quarter of each year in north Wales producing a series of foreshore and mountain sceneries. Working from nature using the 'thin oil' method, a technique he specialised in using turpentine mixed with oil colour, he was able to produce complete paintings in one sitting. Hayes regarded these paintings as 'studies' and they were not shown in public until after his death.
This collection of thin oil paintings was bequeathed to the University by Gerald Hayes on behalf of the family in 1943. It constitutes a unique record of the landscape of north Wales. - Summary Description:
