Pibgorn dwbl (Alboka) / Double hornpipe (Alboka)
- Accession no: 73.39
- Collection: Casgliad Offerynnau Cerdd Ethnograffeg Prifysgol Bangor / Bangor University Musical Instruments Collection
- Name: Double hornpipe (Alboka)
- Place: Sbaen / Sbain
- Collector: Peter Crossley-Holland
- Description: This instrument was played by shepherds as accompaniment to traditional dance. Although its popularity waned at the beginning of the 20th century, it has undergone a resurgence of interest mainly due to the efforts of the younger generation during the last decade.
The similarity between the alboka from Spain and the Welsh pibgorn is striking. Both represent the efforts of a pastoral community (e.g. on the Berwyn Hills near Bala in north Wales) to apply their skill to produce an instrument for the benefit of the entire locality. They also symbolise the cross-cultural influences of one (Celtic) region on another, which in turn transcend geographical and linguistic barriers. - Summary Description:
